Vegan Earth Day 2011 was a resounding success, with activists spreading the vegan message at over 110 events across the United States and Canada! These dedicated FARM volunteers reminded attendees that animal agriculture is trashing our planet - and that we all have the power to make a difference with our food choices.
Most volunteers focused on getting out the message through leafleting and tabling at Earth Day events, but others included vegan food sampling and film screenings. In total, we distributed over 22,000 Green Your Diet and Live Vegan brochures!
In San Francisco, FARM staff and volunteers leafleted at both the SF Green Festival and the first SF Earth Day festival, reaching nearly 1,500 people. FARM staff in Washington, DC handed out 300 vegan ice-cream samples and leaflets at Earth Day Alexandria on April 30th.
Among notable events, New Dawn Montana held their spectacular "Earth Day Everyday" festival which featured films PlanEat and The Real Dirt on Farmer John; free vegan cupcakes, ice cream, and sandwiches; and a keynote speech from "The Mad Cowboy" Howard Lyman
Thanks to generous contributions, FARM was able to run Earth Day-themed billboards for the first year ever! The billboards are reaching people in Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco to encourage drivers to offset their car's carbon footprint by living vegan.
We've seen an increased media focus on the benefits of living vegan in 2011. With full shows by Oprah and Martha Stewart, an announced reality TV show following a vegan baker, and the success of the #1 New York Times best-selling book, The Veganist, it's easier than ever for people to open their eyes to the destructive nature of meat, dairy and eggs!
